It is unlikely for a defective thyroid gland to start functioning normally after several years. Most thyroid disorders are irreversible, except for hypothyroidism caused by pregnancy, temporary inflammation (thyroiditis), or partial removal (surgical or radiotherapy). In these cases, reversibility is usually for a few weeks. Therefore, it is practically impossible for a defective thyroid gland for 10 years to start functioning normally afterwards.
