Can my 14-month-old son have allergies if he seems to be congested often?

It is unlikely that a 14-month-old child would have allergies. Allergies causing respiratory symptoms usually develop around the age of 4, as the child needs to be exposed to an allergen for several years before reacting. Babies at this age are often congested because they cannot blow their noses to clear out mucus. This can worsen at night when lying down, as the mucus can flow into the throat and lungs instead of being cleared out. Using saline water for nasal hygiene can help alleviate congestion. It may take some time for the child to get used to it, but it can be an effective method.
