I took antivirals for 7 days for shingles and the patches are still very red. Is this normal and if yes, can I use Polysporin or another ointment?

It is normal for the red patches from shingles to still be present after taking antiviral medication for 7 days. If there are signs of infection such as yellow or green discharge from the sores, or if the red patches are getting larger or very warm, it may be appropriate to use Polysporin or another ointment. Each person's healing process is different, but using a non-scented moisturizing cream may help increase comfort. If there is still itching, an antihistamine product like Reactine could provide relief.
